Ayurveda - Unani - Siddha - Herbal System of Medicine

AYURVEDIC MEDICINE - also known as Ayurveda. Ayurveda is one of the world's oldest holistic healing systems. It was developed thousands of years ago in India. It is based on the belief that health and wellness depend on a delicate balance between the mind, body, and spirit. The primary focus of Ayurvedic medicine is to promote good health, rather than fight disease. But treatments may be recommended for specific health problems. According to Ayurvedic theory, everything in the universe -- living or not -- is connected. Good health is achieved when your mind, body, and spirit are in harmony with the universe. A disruption of this harmony can lead to poor health and sickness.

Every person is made of a combination of five basic elements found in the universe: Space, Air, Fire, Water, Earth

These elements combine in the human body to form three life forces or energies, called doshas. They control how your body works. The three doshas are:Vata dosha (space and air), Pitta dosha (fire and water), Kapha dosha (water and earth)

Everyone inherits a unique mix of the three doshas. One dosha is usually more dominant. Each dosha controls a different body function. It is believed that your chances of getting sick are linked to the balance of your doshas.

Vata Dosha - Vata dosha (space and air) is thought to be the most powerful of all three doshas. It controls very basic body functions, such as how cells divide. It also controls your: Mind, Breathing, Blood flow, Heart function, Ability to get rid of body waste through the intestines.

Things that can disrupt this dosha are: Eating dry fruit, Eating too soon after a previous meal, Fear, Grief, Staying up too late

If vata dosha is your main life force, you are more likely to develop: Anxiety, Asthma, Heart disease, Nervous system disorders, Rheumatoid arthritis Skin problems

Pitta Dosha - The pitta dosha (fire and water) controls: Digestion, Ability to break down foods, Certain hormones linked to appetite.

Things that can disrupt this dosha are: Eating sour foods, Eating spicy foods, Fatigue, Spending too much time in the sun

If pitta dosha is your main life force, you are more likely to develop: Anger and negative emotions, Crohn's disease, Heart disease, Heartburn a few hours after eating, High blood pressure, Infections

Kapha Dosha - The kapha dosha (water and earth) controls: Muscle growth, Body strength and stability, Weight, Immune system

Things that can disrupt this dosha are: Daytime sleeping, Eating after your stomach is full, Eating or drinking items that have too much salt or water, Eating too many sweet foods, Greed.

If kapha dosha is your main life force, you are more likely to develop: Asthma and other breathing disorders, Cancer, Diabetes, Nausea after eating, Obesity.

UNANI MEDICINE - Unani system originated in Greece, passed through many countries, Arabs enriched it with their aptitude and experience and the system was brought to India during Medieval period. Unani System emphasis the use of naturally occurring, most herbal medicines, though it uses ingredients of animal and marine origin.

There are eight specialized branches of Unani medicine - Internal medicine ( Moalijat ), Gynecology including Obstetrics and Pediatrics, Diseases of the head and neck, Toxicology, Psychiatry, Rejuvenation Therapy including Geriatrics, Sexology, Regimental Therapy, Diet therapy, Hydrotherapy.

According to the Unani discipline as it stands today, the human body is composed of 7 natural and basic components called 'Umoor e Tabaiyah' which are responsible for maintenance of health. These are - Arkan (Elements), Mizaj (Temperament), Akhlaat (Humours), Aaza (Organs), Arwah (Vital forces or Neuro), Quwa (Faculties), Afaal (Functions)

The loss of any one of these basic components or alteration in their physical state could lead to disease, or even death. It is highly essential to consider all these factors so as to reach the correct diagnosis and consequently the correct line of treatment. The Unani System of addressing whole health considers illness as an event serving to cleans, purify, and balance us on the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual planes.

SIDDHA MEDICINE - Siddha system of medicine is one of the oldest systems of medicine practiced in South India especially in Tamil Nadu. It is a traditional system of medicine which is gradually evolved along with the Dravidians culture and hence this system is known as Dravidian system of medicine. The exponents of Siddha system of medicine are called Siddhars.

This system is mainly based on Andapinda Thathuvam that means the relationship between the universe and human body. These two are interlinked through the five basic principles which are known as Panchaboothas. The structural aspect of the human body is said to be Udal Thathus (i.e. the physical component of the human body) and the functional units of the human body is said to be Uyir Thathus (the physiological units i.e., Vatham, Pitham, and Kapham). Functional co-operation of these two are essential for the maintenance of health.

It is very vast in Siddha when compared with other indigenous system of medicine. In siddha system, thousands of raw drugs are used. These drugs are categorized into three groups, namely herbal products, metal, mineral products and animal products. Before preparing medicines, siddha physicians laid a great emphasis in purification of raw drugs. More than 80% of the siddha medicines are formulated by herbal products. But in certain life threatening diseases and in many chronic diseases the herbal medicines alone is not much effective. In such conditions, Siddhars enumerated some herbo-metal and herbo-mineral formulations. These types of medicines are prepared by a standard purification and preparatory techniques and the finished product is very minute and it seems to be size of nano microns or even less.

Treatments in siddha are widely classified in to 64 types i.e. 32 types of internal medications and 32 external treatments. Some preventive measurements are also clearly mentioned in siddha system. Among theses diet plays major role. One should take proper diet in proper time with proper quantity, need not worry about diseases. Therayar, a Siddha exponent insists some preventive methods to be followed on a day-to-day basis as well as seasonal basis which are highly useful for preventing many of the life style diseases.

Salient Features of Siddha - Simple and safe medicines, Very effective for chronic ailments, Not only for correct the diseases but it also maintains the perfect state of the body, Medicines are palatable, Treatment available for all age groups, Specific treatment for old age (Geriatrics) problems, Enhance the immunity of growing children, Varma therapy are highly effective for neurological, musculo-skeletal problems and promotes physical and mental fitness.
