Vaginismus is when the muscles of a woman\u2019s vagina squeeze or spasm when something is entering it,<\/b> like a tampon or a penis. It can range from mildly uncomfortable to quite painful. Vaginismus makes sexual intercourse difficult or impossible<\/b> (the vagina can completely close up) and it can be painful. The symptoms can vary from one women to the next.\t\t<\/p>\n

Vaginismus Types<\/h2>\n

\t\tThere are two main types of vaginismus.<\/p>\n

Primary<\/b>
\nThis is when a woman has had pain every time something entered their vagina, including a penis (called penetrative sex), or when they\u2019re never been able to insert anything into their vagina. It\u2019s also called lifelong vaginismus.<\/p>\n

Secondary<\/b>
\nThis is when a woman has had sex without pain before, but then it becomes difficult or impossible. It\u2019s also called acquired vaginismus.<\/p>\n

Symptoms<\/h2>\n

\t\t\u2022\tDifficult or impossible penetration of the vagina, because the muscles in the vagina have tightened
\n\u2022\tBurning or stinging pain and tightness of the vagina if penetrated by a tampon, finger or penis
\n\u2022\tFear of pain
\n\u2022\tIntense fear of penetration and avoidance of sex
\n\u2022\tLoss of sexual desire if penetration is attempted
\n\u2022\tSome women are able to have intercourse, but tightness and pain prevent orgasm. <\/p>\n

Causes<\/h2>\n

\t\tThere\u2019s not always a reason for vaginismus. The condition has been linked to:
\n past sexual abuse or trauma
\n past painful intercourse
\n emotional factors<\/p>\n

Other possible causes include:<\/b>
\n fear that the vagina is too small for sexual intercourse
\n fear of getting pregnant

\n the after-effects of childbirth
\nrelationship problems
\n tiredness or depression<\/p>\n

Diagnosis<\/h2>\n

\t\tYour doctor will likely ask:<\/b>
\n\u2022\twhen you first noticed a problem
\n\u2022\thow often it occurs
\n\u2022\twhat seems to trigger it<\/p>\n

Typically, your doctor will also ask about your sexual history, which may include questions about whether you\u2019ve ever experienced sexual trauma or abuse.
