An enlarged prostate, medically known as Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), is a common condition that affects many men as they grow older. The prostate gland typically begins to enlarge after the age of 40, and the likelihood of developing BPH increases with age. While BPH is a non-cancerous condition, it can significantly affect urinary health and quality of life if left untreated. It is one of the most common prostate conditions in men over 60 years of age.

The prostate gland plays an important role in the male reproductive system by producing a fluid that nourishes and protects sperm. It surrounds the urethra, the tube that carries urine from the bladder through the penis. As the prostate enlarges, it can compress the urethra, restricting the normal flow of urine. This may lead to symptoms such as frequent urination, difficulty starting urination, a weak urine stream, interrupted flow, straining during urination, a feeling of incomplete bladder emptying, and frequent nighttime urination (nocturia).

Several factors may contribute to the development of BPH, including ageing, hormonal changes, family history, obesity, diabetes, and lifestyle factors. Because these symptoms may also be associated with other urinary or prostate conditions, including prostate cancer or urinary tract disorders, a proper medical evaluation is essential for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment plan.

At ASGAR Healthcare Group, our doctors provide comprehensive evaluation and personalized Ayurvedic consultation for men experiencing urinary and prostate health concerns. Following a detailed assessment, we develop an individualized treatment plan that may include Ayurvedic medicines, dietary guidance, and lifestyle recommendations to support prostate health, improve urinary function, and enhance overall well-being. If you are experiencing symptoms of an enlarged prostate, early consultation can help you understand the cause of your symptoms and explore suitable treatment options.

Causes of Enlarged Prostate

The prostate gland is a small, walnut-sized organ located below the bladder and in front of the rectum. It surrounds the urethra, the tube that carries urine from the bladder through the penis. As men age, the prostate may gradually enlarge, narrowing the urethra and making it more difficult for urine to pass. During the early stages of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), the bladder muscle works harder to push urine through the narrowed passage, which may result in frequent and urgent urination.

The exact cause of prostate enlargement is not fully understood, but age-related hormonal changes are believed to play a significant role. Research suggests that changes in male hormones (androgens), estrogen levels, growth factors, and other cellular signaling processes may contribute to the increase in prostate cells. Additional risk factors include advancing age, family history, obesity, diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and an inactive lifestyle.

As the prostate continues to enlarge, the bladder may no longer be able to empty completely. This can lead to persistent urinary symptoms such as difficulty starting urination, a weak urine stream, interrupted flow, frequent urination, nighttime urination (nocturia), urgency, and the sensation of incomplete bladder emptying. These symptoms can gradually affect daily activities and overall quality of life.

If left untreated, severe BPH may increase the risk of complications, including recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs), urinary retention (sudden inability to urinate), bladder stones, bladder damage, or kidney problems. Early medical evaluation and appropriate treatment are important to identify the underlying cause of urinary symptoms and help maintain long-term prostate and urinary tract health.
