1) Libido & sexual response
Testosterone plays a big role in sexual desire, arousal, and overall sexual satisfaction. Low levels are linked with low libido in some women (especially after menopause or ovary removal).

2) Energy & motivation
It supports general vitality, drive, and motivation. When levels are very low, people sometimes describe feeling flat, tired, or less “sparked.”

3) Muscle strength & body composition
It helps maintain muscle mass and strength and supports a healthier fat-to-muscle ratio. This doesn’t mean women get bulky—testosterone levels in women are much lower than in men.

4) Bone health
Testosterone contributes to bone density (often indirectly by being converted to estrogen in the body). Low levels can be one piece of the osteoporosis risk puzzle.

5) Mood & cognitive function
It’s involved in mood regulation, confidence, and aspects of focus and memory. Low testosterone can be associated with low mood or brain fog in some women (not always, and it’s rarely the only factor).

6) Hormone balance & overall health
Testosterone interacts with estrogen, progesterone, and adrenal hormones. It’s part of the whole hormonal orchestra, not a solo instrument.

What happens if testosterone is too low?

Some women may notice:

  • Fatigue
  • Reduced muscle strength
  • Low mood or motivation
  • Lower sense of wellbeing

What about too much testosterone?

Excess testosterone (like in PCOS) can cause:

  • Acne
  • Facial/body hair growth
  • Scalp hair thinning
  • Irregular periods
  • Sometimes mood changes

So it’s really about balance, not “more is better.”

Should women take testosterone?

Sometimes it’s prescribed (usually low-dose) for postmenopausal women with persistent low libido that doesn’t respond to other treatments. It’s not a general wellness supplement and isn’t for everyone. Blood tests, symptoms, and medical supervision matter here.
